Long Range Vane Speed Testing: AAE vs TAC

Whether you are getting ready for Total Archery Challenge or building arrows for the upcoming season I think vane choices are always an important consideration and I really enjoy an all around vane to use for everything. I have been a fan of the AAE Hybrid 26 vanes for awhile. They flat out work and are easy to apply. They have always steered fixed broadheads exceptionally well for me. One of the main knocks I see about AAE vanes are the weight. This is what led me to want to try the TAC vanes. They are roughly 2.5 grains less per vane and are much stiffer. They do require a primer pen similar to the AAE max stealth. I initially tried to get the arrows the exact weight by adding some paper I taped down on the arrow with the TAC vanes but that was a fail. It was catching a lot of drag so ended up doing the test with everything being the same besides the fletching. While not an even test with the arrows weighing 455 (TAC)and 465 (AAE), I did not find there to be a dramatic difference in speed for the stiffer vanes and the 10 grains less of weight did add more speed just not sure if the design did.. I’m curious what others have found and if the speed down range comes down to simply total weight or if the TAC vanes actually make a difference as well that is noticeable.l for speed due to design. Regardless it was a fun test and if you want to lower total weight the TAC Vanes are pretty neat and I enjoyed testing them but if you don’t mind the weight of the AAE I think they are hard to beat for the money.
