Postpartum Joint Pain? Why Stretching Might Not Be the Solution Hey everyone, it’s Amy from Moment of Truth Physical Therapy! Today, I want to tackle a common misconception: “If you have joint pain, the solution must be stretching, right?” Not so fast. This is especially true for postpartum women dealing with the lingering effects of the relaxin hormone. Let’s reframe the approach to managing joint pain in a way that respects your body’s incredible design. ❣️Three Key Strategies for Managing Postpartum Joint Pain 🟠Prioritize Tissue Pliability and Mobility Instead of focusing solely on stretching, think about making your tissues more pliable. Use tools like foam rollers or massage guns to release tight areas and improve mobility. Address imbalances in tissue tension to prevent uneven forces pulling on your joints. 🟠Check for Symmetry (Right vs. Left, Front vs. Back) Pain in one area might actually be caused by tightness or imbalance on the opposite side. For example, right hip pain could stem from tightness on the left side. If you’re experiencing upper back pain (common during nursing or carrying your baby), it might be connected to tightness in the chest or shoulders. Balance matters—check the opposite side and the full body for hidden tension. 🟠Don’t Overlook Core and Pelvic Floor Recovery Pregnancy causes significant changes to your core and pelvic floor muscles. Even if you didn’t experience diastasis (abdominal separation), these muscles were stretched and may need attention. Weak or unengaged core and pelvic floor muscles can lead to compensations elsewhere, contributing to joint pain. A proper recovery program can help you re-engage these muscles and restore balance throughout your body. ❣️Why Stretching Alone Isn’t Always the Answer Stretching might provide temporary relief, but if it’s not addressing the root cause (like tightness elsewhere or core weakness), it can sometimes make the issue worse. Your body’s natural response to instability is to tighten up, and stretching without resolving the underlying cause can exacerbate that tension. ❣️Let’s Take Care of Your Body Together Postpartum recovery is a journey, and it’s important to listen to your body as it heals.
