Sphesihle Jerry Dambuza, a media intern for the Contemporary Archive Project (CAP), had the opportunity to work closely with artists from the University of Arts Bremen (HFK), and local creators, in an immersive exchange program hosted at the KZNSA Gallery. This programme, part of the ArtsResearchLab (ARL), allowed Dambuza to combine his academic background in commercial photography with practical experience, marking his first commercial project. His work is centered around the exploration of artistic processes, with a focus on the intersection of technique, creativity, and medium. In his role as a documentarian, Dambuza was tasked with capturing the artistic journeys of both HFK and local artists. Through this, he sought to understand and showcase their methods, processes, and the subtle transformations occurring within their work. He chose stop-motion photography as the medium for this documentation—an approach that proved both challenging and enlightening. The precision required in stop-motion, where each frame is carefully crafted to build a seamless narrative, mirrored the patience and dedication he observed in the artists’ practices. This body of work goes beyond traditional documentation; it aims to capture the often-overlooked moments—The in-between stages, shifts in perspective, and the layers of effort that accumulate toward an artwork’s completion. Dambuza’s photographic process, rooted in his commercial background, becomes a narrative tool that highlights the beauty of creation, with all its rawness, struggles, and triumphs. Through this collaboration in the ARL framework, Dambuza has not only refined his technical skills but also gained a deeper understanding of the fluid relationship between commercial work and art. This exchange has expanded his view of photography as a storytelling medium, one that transcends the boundaries of commerce to serve as a tool for reflection, documentation, and connection. The opportunity to work alongside artists from both HFK and DUT, as well as within the collaborative environment of the ArtsResearchLab, has been a transformative experience that continues to shape his artistic journey.
