Charlotte city leaders heard an update Thursday on the proposed I-77 South Express Lanes project, a plan that has drawn months of tension and calls from some community groups to stop it altogether. State transportation officials briefed members of the Charlotte City Council’s Transportation, Planning and Development Committee on the status of the project and outlined new efforts to gather feedback from residents. One step in that process will be the creation of a community engagement center where residents can meet with project leaders, review plans and ask questions about the proposal. The I-77 South Express Lanes project has been discussed for more than two decades. Transportation officials say the goal is to address congestion along a busy corridor as the Charlotte region continues to grow. According to state data, commuters in the Charlotte area spend an average of about 41 hours a year sitting in traffic. More from Jesse Pierre: https://www.wcnc.com/article/traffic/...
