Andean civilizations bear striking similarities with Himalayan and other Asian cultures. Viracocha was the mythical heroic chief who gathered the tribes around Lake Titicaca, and gave rise to the Caral civilization, the oldest advanced culture in the Americas, dating back to the 4th millennium BCE. In the 15th century CE, Pachacuti founded the largest empire in pre-Columbian America, encompassing most of the Andean region from southern Colombia to northern Chile. A huge road system stemmed from Cusco into 4 directions. The emperor was referred to as "Sapa Inca", meaning "the absolute ruler". Andean civilizations have bequeathed to us a remarkable legacy consisting of mountain fortresses, astronomical observatories, pyramids, and geoglyphs, not to mention plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, pineapples, quinoa, peanuts, quinoa, and cocoa.
