In 1886, while studying ophthalmology in Heidelberg, Germany, Jose Rizal wrote A Las Flores de Heidelberg (To the Flowers of Heidelberg). Inspired by the beauty of spring blooms, he expressed his deep love for the Philippines, asking the flowers to carry his hopes for peace and courage to his homeland: “Go to my country, go, O foreign flowers, sown by the traveler along the road, and under that blue heaven that watches over my loved ones, recount the devotion the pilgrim nurses for his native sod!" Today, on Rizal Day, we pay tribute to his bravery, intellect, and ultimate sacrifice for the country. We present the Philippine Madrigal Singers’ poignant rendition of A Las Flores de Heidelberg, with music composed by Ily Matthew Maniano. The song premiered in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany on Oct. 27, 2024, the last day of the 4-day launching program of the Philippine as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025. This heartfelt performance captures Jose Rizal’s legacy—a relentless pursuit of truth and an enduring message of hope and resilience.
