Warning: This Phuket Vegetarian Festival video contains graphic content, such as extreme body piercing. It is an unedited video shot in 2007 as part of my MBA in Hospitality and Tourism Management program field research at Prince of Songkla University, Phuket. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival has been around for several hundred years, a tradition based in Taoism made popular by Hokkien Chinese who traveled to Phuket from coastal China. Hokkien-speaking Chinese originally came to Phuket to work in the island’s tin mines, once numerous and prosperous, especially in Kathu District, near today’s Prince of Songkla University. The hardships they endured, including sickness and fever from the surrounding jungles, were cured after villagers observed a strict vegetarian and followed a number of rituals. These practices, perhaps enhanced in recent years by the tourism industry, nonetheless offer insight to Phuket’s rich and multiethnic cultural heritage.
