It is also, however, statistically the most dangerous place in Jamaica. Controlled by various gangs, who often clash in violent confrontations on the streets, the city is regarded by many experts as the current epicentre of gang activity in Jamaica. Life in Spanish town is not for the weak. It creates tough people who do what it takes to survive and prosper. It is also a place seldom visited by many Jamaicans let alone tourists. The streets are dangerous and walking around unaccompanied by locals in-the-know is not recommended. I convinced ​⁠‪@RiskyRegg‬ to join me as I visited Spanish Town to see the good work DJ Kan is undertaking at Youths On The Rise. DJ Kan is offering facilities and a community to allow residents the opportunity to focus on and showcase their musical talents. Without doubt this gives a positive creative outlet in a city where people can very quickly become affiliated with gang activity. DJ Kan and the boys from Youths On The Rise then gave us a fascinating walking tour around the garrisons and markets of Spain Town. This was an unforgettable and rare opportunity that would not have been possible without their assistance. It's safe to say me and Reggie were a little 'on-edge' about filming this video before we started, but the locals in Spanish Town soon made us feel incredibly welcome and put on a great party in the evening to show us there is plenty of love and community in the city.
