Edibles being placed into bag at dispensary STORYLINE: Voters in the US state of Colorado have legalised the recreational use of marijuana, a move which clashes with US federal drug policy. A similar measure was also approved in Washington state, although voters in Oregon rejected the measure to allow recreational use of the drug. The marijuana measures in Colorado and Washington set up a showdown with the federal government, which outlaws the drug. When state and federal laws conflict, federal law takes precedence. Federal authorities could sue in an attempt to block the measures in Colorado and Washington from taking effect. It remained unclear how the federal government would respond. Supporters of the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol in Denver, Colorado erupted in cheers as they watched the results come in, confirming the policy. "We've taken a step forward for common sense drug policy. We're going to send a message around the world that marijuana prohibition has failed and it's time for a new direction," said campaign member Brian Vicente, author of the ballot measure. Other backers of the measure were more concise in their reaction. "It means I'm going to smoke a lot of weed tonight,'' said Gary Rymer. Colorado's Amendment 64 will allow adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce (28 grammes) of marijuana, though using the drug publicly would still be banned. The amendment would also allow people to grow up to six marijuana plants in a private, secure area. Legalisation backers argued that marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol and should be regulated and taxed. "We're a step ahead and we will continue to lead the way."
