Rovinah Atuhaire aged 40 is a resident of Rushekye A, Karengere parish, Muko Sub-county in Rubanda district and has been living with a walking disability ever since she was 5 years old according to what she heard from her parents. Atuhaire says that her disability has been a working demotivation for over the years until she resorted to craft making after being empowered by different empowerment groups and she has been doing this for about 6 years now which turned into major source of income. //////////////////////////////// Atuhaire narrates to our reporter that because of her disability, she has always faced the challenge of accessing raw materials to use for craft making saying that she at most times inject in money to get the resources. She adds that the making of one basket takes her 3days till completion revealing that the craft prices ranges from 8000USHS to 25000USHS according to the size. She adds saying that with her business of craft making, she has managed to pay school fees and take care of a now senior two student, renovate her house amidst and brought animals that she rears from home and all this archived from her business. Atuhaire further narrates how she took on the craft-making activity for business to earn a living after being trained by a certain woman empowerment organization that introduced her to the Green Environment Program, GEP which has regularly provided an avenue for an international Market for her products. According to Atuhaire’s caretaker Evans Mbabazi., Atuhaire has gradually improved and turned her business into her source of income. She adds saying that getting materials to use has been the number one challenge in the business saying that it takes time and money to access them. The Executive Director for the Green Environment Program, GEP Evelyn Ninsiima Kyikafunda says that they have worked and trained different women groups in practices of environmental conservation and the sustainable use of the raw materials and products from the environment. Kikafunda made these remarks while launching the distribution of 450 wheelchairs chairs to People living with disability in Kigezi Sub Region. She revealed that she has created an international market for the crafts made by the group of vulnerable people they work with as they are exported to counties on UK and America. She further adds that this has earned the country revenue at a certain point in time.
