(29 May 2020) Residents in Bogota's Kennedy neighborhood are on high alert over coronavirus fears. On Thursday two of the largest hospitals operated at over 75% ICU capacity as poorer areas are seeing the numbers of patients with infections rise. Only a third of all intensive care unit beds for COVID-19 patients are occupied in other parts of Bogota. Kennedy – named after the late US president – had few infections at the end of March, but now has over 1,600, the highest number anywhere in the city. "People are seriously ill, people who can't speak, people who are unable to get up by themselves," said former patient, 18-year-old Dionis Palacios. "To see so many seriously ill people. That is frightening." Chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease are on the upswing in poorer areas. The region is home to five of the world's 30 largest cities and they are highly segregated. The poor live in smaller homes packed with more people – many of whom are breaking strict quarantines to go out and work or look for food. As of Thursday Colombia has reported more than 24,104 coronavirus cases and close to 803 deaths so far, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. However, the number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
