Battle Arena Toshinden is a 1995 fighting game developed by Tamsoft and published by Takara for the PlayStation. It was one of the first fighting games to feature polygonal characters in a 3D environment and introduced a sidestep manoeuvre that helped define 3D fighting games. Originally developed as a PlayStation exclusive, it was later ported to Sega Saturn (Battle Arena Toshinden Remix), Game Boy, and MS-DOS. The game features eight anime-style, weapons-based fighters designed by Tsukasa Kotobuki, with mechanics similar to 2D fighters like Street Fighter. Players can sidestep, use special attacks, and knock opponents out of the arena. The game was critically acclaimed for its graphics, including Gouraud shading and transparency effects, but later lost popularity to Tekken. The story follows a secret underground fighting tournament hosted by the "Secret Society," with contestants from around the world seeking fame, fortune, or personal revenge. The main character, Eiji Shinjo, enters to find his lost brother. Other characters include bounty hunters, detectives, knights, and assassins, with hidden bosses such as Gaia and Sho Shinjo. Development took under six months, with Takara and Tamsoft drawing inspiration from Virtua Fighter but aiming for a more dynamic 3D experience. The game sold well, especially at the PlayStation’s launch, but the Saturn version had weaker sales. Over time, Battle Arena Toshinden spawned sequels, manga, anime adaptations, and drama CDs. However, its sequels received lukewarm reception, leading to the franchise being overshadowed by competitors like Tekken and Soul Edge. A prequel game in the Toshinden series appeared in the Japanese gaming magazine Dengeki Playstation in 1997, the game titled Toshinden Next, however this game would never be release. In 2008 a new entry in the series was announced by Takara Tomy, developed by DreamFactory this game would see a release in 2009, this release would be exclusive to the Wii as well as being exclusive to Japan. While the game does carry the Toshinden name it does not follow the story of the original games, it also moves away from the weapons based fighting of the original games. #gaming #videogames #fightinggames 00:00 - Intro 00:32 - Battle Arena Toshinden (PS1, MS-DOS - 1995/96) 02:01 - Battle Arena Toshinden Remix (Sega Saturn - 1995) 04:05 - Battle Arena Toshinden 2 (Arcade, PS1, Windows - 1995/97) 06:01 - Battle Arena Toshinden (Game Boy - 1996) 07:50 - Battle Arena Toshinden 2 Plus (PS1 - 1996) 09:59 - Battle Arena NiToshinden (PS1 - 1996) 12:34 - Battle Arena Toshinden Ultimate Revenge Attack (Sega Saturn - 1996) 14:01 - Battle Arena Toshinden 3 (PS1 - 1996) 17:14 - Puzzle Arena Toshinden (PS1 - 1997) 18:51 - Toshinden Card Quest (PS1 - 1998) 20:52 - Toshinden 4 (PS1 - 1999) 22:43 - Toshinden (Cover Only) (Wii - 2009) 23:00 - Outro For other series focus videos check out this playlist • Series Focus
