Deventer is one the oldest towns in the Netherlands. In medieval times Deventer was a very important and wealthy city. Her wealth was mostly thanks to trade along the river IJssel. Many of the buildings erected in those profitable days still remain. One of thoose buildings is De Waag (1528), a monumental building that now accomodates the Historical Museum Deventer and the Tourist Information Office. It is located on the edge of the market square De Brink. 'De Brink' has houses, shops, and cafes dating from 1575-1900. Deventer was a member of the Hanseatic League, an economic alliance of trading cities and their guilds that dominated trade along the coast of Northern Europe in the later Middle Ages. Deventer has its own Leaning Tower of Pisa, the building 'De Waag' leans over quite a lot. During the production of the movie A Bridge Too Far all of the scenes taking place in nearby Arnhem were filmed in Deventer - as Arnhem itself had lost its historic center.
