The area was first settled by Europeans in 1812 when William Coffin and his family established a sawmill near what is now Hammonton Lake. Coffin and his sons, including John Hammond Coffin, later built a glass factory, and the community became known as "Hammondton" after his son, with the "d" eventually being dropped. The town's growth was fundamentally reshaped by the arrival of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad in 1854, which led land developers like Charles K. Landis to promote the area for farming. This shift to agriculture, particularly the cultivation of strawberries and blueberries, laid the groundwork for its future. On March 5, 1866, Hammonton was officially incorporated as a town. Following its incorporation, a significant wave of Italian immigration helped the town's population and economy flourish, establishing a rich cultural heritage that continues to be a defining part of its identity today.
