Tim Rice-Oxley, songwriter and ivory-tickler for British piano-rockers Keane, always wanted to write a song about a little café near the band’s old stomping grounds in Battle, East Sussex. The Sovereign Light Café really exists in Bexhill-on-Sea, and so do all of the street names in the song. Keane performs “Sovereign Light Café,” the third single from their 2012 album “Strangeland,” to a small crowd of rapt River listeners at the Boston House of Blues. Their goosebump-worthy performance is intercut with scenes from an arcade and boardwalk in a beach town in this unofficial music video. “Sovereign Light Café” hearkens back to the hopeful days of adolescence: “a time,” says Rice-Oxley, “when we were talking about all the great stuff we were going to do with our lives.” It’s not just nostalgic for a time or a place or a group of friends who, perhaps, have fallen out of touch. The song remembers a frame of mind we all inhabited in those romanticized teen years, a time when we wanted the world and believed we could have it. Well, why not?
