I began studying Chinese language and culture in 2009 and during my bachelor’s degree I spent several months living and studying in Beijing. That time left a deep mark on me. It is where I first became fascinated by Chinese music, enough to write my thesis on archaic Chinese musical traditions. I took guzheng lessons and bought the instrument you hear in this track. Bringing it back to Italy was an adventure on its own, wrapped in a blanket, bubble wrap and my winter coat for the flight. Against all odds, it arrived intact and has been with me ever since. For many years I did not have the chance to play it and I am a bit rusty now, but returning to it for this song felt like reconnecting with a part of myself I thought had gone quiet. It reminded me how magical this instrument is, and while working on this track I discovered how beautifully it blends with the cello, a combination I had never explored before but one that turned out to be unexpectedly powerful.
