On the feast of the Immaculate Conception each year, the Fourvière Festival of Lights celebrates the enthroning of Mary in the Sanctuary of our hearts. On the 8th December, 1852, the golden statue of Mary was enthroned on top of the Basilica at Fourvière in Lyon. The towns folk lit candles and lanterns as the statue processed through the streets in the pouring rain. This was at the time of a great flourishing of missionary activity which brought the Gospel to Oceania and New Zealand. Now each year at the Sanctuary of Fourvière in Leithfield, the Beatitudes Community celebrate the Festival of Lights. The feast is extra special in New Zealand as Bishop Pompallier dedicated Oceania to Mary, the Immaculate Conception and also on that same feast in 1994, the Community of the Beatitudes arrived in New Zealand. The golden statue at the Sanctuary of Fourvière in Leithfield was blessed at the first New Zealand Festival of Lights in 2019 by Bishop Patrick Le Gal of Lyon and Bishop Paul Martin of Christchurch. The main celebrant in 2022 was the new Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Reverend Michael Gielen.
