Every year, volunteers from all walks of life use GPS technology to map where water remains during the driest time of year along the 143-mile long San Pedro River and its key tributaries. The Nature Conservancy coordinates this massive effort with the help of many partner agencies. Given the prolonged drought in southern Arizona, it is critical to gather this information to assess how water supplies are holding up. The mapping project is made possible through the hundreds of long-term volunteers in both the U.S. and Mexico who dedicate their time to hike under adverse conditions in remote locations in midsummer to gather the data.
