Hannah Dawson, Hilary Lawson, Paul Broks and Julian Baggini ask who's really in control. Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/in-search-of-fre... Once it was straightforward. We were born free and shackled by self-serving authority. Now from neuroscientists to social theorists, many argue that we were never free in the first place. Constrained by our genes, manipulated by technology and the cultural zeitgeist, there seems little space left for individual autonomy. Should we conclude that the very idea of freedom was a mistake, which once abandoned will enable us to reframe human behaviour and success and create a more equal society? #freedom #philosophy #freewill Paul Broks is an English neuropsychologist and science writer. Following an NHS career in clinical neuropsychology and academic posts at the universities of Sheffield, Birmingham and Plymouth he turned to freelance writing. She received a major British Academy Research Development Award for her Clarendon Edition of Locke’s Disputations on the law nature, and held the inaugural Balzan-Skinner Lectureship at the University of Cambridge to work on the normativity of nature in early-modern thought. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Hilary Lawson is an English philosopher, known for his theory of closure. He has also had a journalistic and documentary career.
