Botrytis bud rot, also known as gray mold, is caused by a naturally occurring fungus that can affect a wide range of crops. The pathogen (B. cinerea) favors moderate-to-cool temperatures and wet conditions or high humidity. Botrytis bud rot is most common in greenhouses where cannabis is grown for cuttings (clones) or for cannabinoids/flowers. Dr. Zamir Punja, plant pathologist at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, provides an overview of the diseases cycle and management options for cannabis growers. Dr. Punja's research program includes management strategies for new and emerging diseases of cannabis, including the application of biotechnology. His program also includes disease management of vegetable and horticulture crops in British Columbia.
