Located in the county of Staffordshire, and around five miles east of Stoke-on-Trent, is the town of Cheadle (not to be confused with Cheadle in Greater Manchester). In 1250 a market charter was granted to Cheadle by Henry III. On the site of the original market place is the market cross - a stone structure believed to date from the 17th century, first seen prominently around the 4-and-a-half minute mark. At the northwestern end of the town centre is the parish church, dedicated to St Giles. This dates from the 1830s, having been built to replace an earlier church from the 14th century. A few streets away is a Roman Catholic church, also dedicated to St Giles. This boasts a 60-metre (~200ft) tall spire, and is Grade I listed, whereas the Anglican parish church is only Grade II listed. The Roman Catholic church was designed by Augustus Pugin, the renowned architect who played a key role in designing the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben (or the Palace of Westminster and the Elizabeth Tower, if you prefer). In 1901 a railway station opened in Cheadle, courtesy of the North Staffordshire Railway. This was the northern terminus of a branch line just under 4 miles long, connecting to Cresswell on the Crewe–Derby line. Cheadle station closed in 1963, and Cresswell station closed in 1966. Today, public transport to Cheadle consists of direct buses from Stoke-on-Trent (Hanley), Uttoxeter and various other nearby locations. In 1980 Alton Towers opened as a theme park. Having previously been a country estate in the village of Alton, it grew into what is today the UK's biggest theme park. Its nearest town is Cheadle, around five miles away. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
