TfL bus route 401 is now run by GoAhead, London Central. New Wright StreetDeck Electroliners will enter service in the future. Route 401 is currently using a temporary diesel allocation. ADL Enviro400s from 2009 and 2011 and Wright Eclipse Gemini 2s from 2009, 2010 and 2011 are used. They will be replaced by new Wright StreetDeck Electroliner EVs in the future. These have been transferred from routes 101, 104, 200, 320 and 473. Route 401's peak vehicle requirement has also been increased. The route now uses 8 buses instead of 7. Route 401 was run by Arriva until the 18th of January 2025. The route ran from Dartford (DT) garage. Wright Eclipse Gemini 2s from 2011 were allocated. However, ADL Enviro400s regularly appeared on the route. Route 401 runs from Thamesmead Town Centre to Bexleyheath Shopping Centre. The route runs via Thamesmead Carlyle Road, Harrow Manorway, Thames Innovation Centre, Yarnton Way for Belvedere Station, Anderson Way (Mondays to Fridays), Picardy Manorway, Belvedere Station, All Saints Church, Nuxley Road, Bedonwell Road and Long Lane. Anderson Way bus stop is only served by route 401 on weekdays. Route 401 runs every 15 minutes Mondays to Fridays. The route runs every 30 minutes on Sundays and evenings. Route 401 is 8 miles (13 km) long. A full journey on route 401 takes 25 to 40 minutes. Routes 99 and 269 have also passed to GoAhead. These two routes are also run by Arriva. New Wright StreetDeck Electroliners have also been ordered for the 99, 269 and 401. Most E400s that have transferred to Bexleyheath were previously allocated to route 101 at River Road (RR). Some E400s have also transferred from routes 104 and 320. The ex First Gemini 2s that are now used on route 401 were previously allocated to route 473. They were replaced by BYD BD11s. Some Gemini 2s have also transferred from route 200. Route 401 commenced operation on in January 1988. The route originally ran from Before 1988, the 401 was a commercial route operated by Kentish Bus. Route 401 passed to London Central in 1990. The route passed to Arriva in January 2018. Route 401 connects to National Rail (Southeastern) at Belvedere. It also connects to the SL3 Superloop express bus route in Thamesmead. As mentioned earlier, route 401 has a school day only service. The bus starts at Bexleyheath School at 15:27.
