Your first step is the most important step for a basketball player when it comes to beating your defender. Having the correct footwork to set up your first step is going to give you the advantage over your defender, this is where the split (aka the drop) comes in. The split allows you to load your back leg to better propel you forward, increasing the length of your fist step. To increase the effectiveness of your split stance you also need to develop the pocket dribble. A pocket dribble is simply a dribble that you redirect back to your hip i.e your pocket. Coupling the pocket dribble with the split allows you to read and anticipate your defender by allowing for the basketball to "float" for a second as you make your reads.
