In this video, we’ll relive the last years of steam power at Shrewsbury, capturing the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the sheds, platforms, and express trains that once thundered through this historic railway town. 📌 What you’ll discover in this film: The story of Shrewsbury’s locomotive sheds, first built in 1856 and expanded by the Great Western Railway and the London & North Western Railway. By 1932, the site boasted a modern steel-framed straight shed and a 70-foot turntable—features that became local landmarks. How the sheds operated as a joint GWR and LMS depot, coded 84G, 89A, and later 6D, housing a variety of motive power from Black Fives and Manors to Standard Class 4s and even the mighty 9Fs. Rare glimpses of locomotives in their twilight years: from 7803 “Barcote Manor” and 7821 “Dicheat Manor”, to Standard Class 4s like 75029 “Green Knight”, which clocked up incredible daily mileages on the Cambrian Coast Express before finding fame in preservation. The arrival of diesel power: Type 4s gradually took over prestigious expresses, marking the end of steam in March 1967. The sheds finally closed to all operations by 1972. The tragic reminder of Shrewsbury’s past—the 1907 derailment of the Crewe mail train, one of the worst accidents in the station’s history. The survival of Shrewsbury station itself: a Grade II listed masterpiece with its iconic Severn Bridge Junction signal box, still the largest mechanical signal box in the world. Today, nothing remains of the original steam sheds. But the site is far from forgotten. Since 2008, the area has been home to Coleham TMD, a modern Network Rail depot, continuing Shrewsbury’s long tradition as a railway hub. Locals still know the area as “The Back of the Sheds”, and its steam-era heritage is celebrated by railway enthusiasts and heritage groups across Shropshire.
