Maximum Larry is out and it is great and a bargain to boot. The only 'course' I bought before this was a Steve Morse DVD back in the late 90s (saw him play at a guitar festival in Newport, RI in the late 90s and was blown away). I didn't study it much. I will be much more diligent this go around. So far I've been in the 'Sad Man' lesson with a brief foray into one of the 'Smear' performances. Tom has said 'there are no shortcuts'. Of course this is true, but like Homeskoolin' before it, this course is a map to better days. All the good stuff from the show, condensed, organized, exceptionally produced, digestible and ready for review. The middle part of my thing is at least a little sad. I recorded the part that I video'd first, then overdubbed two other guitar parts and a bass part. Here's what I took away from the lesson: 1) set my Deluxe Reverb to vol 5 treble 6 and bass 3 (settings Tom recommended to get in the ball park (vol 4 or 5 by his recommendation), 2) the right hand has to be rhythmically accurate, the left hand has to be precise, 3) making the notes even and appropriately dynamic is hard and must always be paid attention to, 4) really pay attention to how you hit the strings, 5) a lighter touch might be the way to making for a more dynamic performance, 6) hold the pick just enough so you don't drop it, 7) use open strings where possible (I used the open G string a lot in this), 8) clams don't matter (as much) if you play perfectly in time, etc, etc, etc. Thanks for doing the course Tom and Brett!
