I haven’t lived with them since I was 8, and I haven’t spoken to them at all since I was 12—by their choice. When I was a kid, my parents sent me to live with my grandparents because I was “acting out” while they focused entirely on my medically fragile younger sister. I was ignored, pushed aside, and eventually punished for trying to get attention. After one breaking point, my mom told me she hated me and wanted me gone. My dad dropped me off at my grandparents’ house and said they were done with me. My grandparents fought for custody. My parents didn’t want me back, but they also didn’t want to pay child support.
