EFT is primarily renowned as a couples therapy, prompting inquiries about EFIT, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy. The question often arises: How did it come about? Isn't EFT predominantly designed for couples? Reflecting on its origins after around 30 years, it felt as though EFT had significantly contributed to couples therapy, providing a set of interventions with proven and powerful outcomes. The global training of therapists and the creation of an online educational program for couples further solidified its impact. Yet, a voice suggested retirement, which seemed dull. Contemplating what still intrigued me, I recognized my enduring fascination with how individuals heal from trauma. Witnessing clients rise from the depths of their injuries, displaying remarkable strength and courage, was profoundly inspiring. Just as I had done with couples therapy, I started recording and closely examining individual therapy sessions, and I became captivated. The very interventions that yielded exceptional results in couple sessions propelled trauma clients toward a sense of secure connection and safe healing intimacy with themselves and others. And so, individually focused EFT was born—or perhaps, it was brought out of the closet, as it had been there all along. The roadmap to understanding the nature of emotions, the ways we confine ourselves in self-protection, and the essence of our fundamental fears and needs—clarified through our work with couples—provided a clear path to human growth beyond trauma, leading to health and resilience.
