Suheyl Umar: "It is obvious that some aspects of our life where we are placed at this moment in the 21st century are beyond our control. What does it mean to be human, and how am I placed in the whole cosmic unfolding of divine manifestation? Religious life is not about altered states of consciousness. It is about altered states of character. How more compassionate, loving, caring, have you become? As Jung has said: "What is important is the way a person relates to the infinite." God created out of love. It is out of divine mercy that manifestation takes place, and it is in the nature of the Absolute to radiate. Underlying the human self and animating is a reservoir of being that never dies, is never exhausted, and is unrestricted in consciousness and bliss. Why do we not act accordingly? The answer lies in the depth at which the eternal is buried." ---------- Dr. Muhammad Suheyl Umar is a leading scholar of Sufism and the intellectual history of the Indian subcontinent. For more than three decades he served as Director of the Iqbal Academy Pakistan, where he oversaw major publications, translations, and international collaborations that shaped the field of Iqbal studies. Through his teaching, writing, and leadership, Dr. Umar has become a vital voice in contemporary Islamic thought, linking the spiritual heritage of Sufism with pressing philosophical and cultural questions of the modern era. Educated at Government College Lahore, Allama Iqbal Open University, and Punjab University, he combines rigorous academic training with a deep engagement in classical Islamic thought. He has also held positions as Academic Director at the Institute of Islamic Culture, visiting scholar at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (Kuala Lumpur), and adjunct faculty at institutions such as LUMS. A prolific author and editor, Dr. Umar founded the Urdu journal Riwayat and served for decades as Editor of the Iqbal Review, a journal published in multiple languages and devoted to philosophy, literature, religion, and history. His own works include The Religious Other: Towards a Muslim Theology of Other Religions in a Post-Prophetic Age and Iqbal and the Modern Era, alongside numerous essays on metaphysics, comparative religion, and the history of ideas. Widely recognized for his contributions, he has been a recipient of honors such as the John Templeton Award for the Science-Religion Interface. He has played a leading role in fostering interfaith dialogue, contributing to international conferences, and advising scholarly institutions across the Muslim world and beyond.
