Katamari Damacy’s eclectic, genre-hopping soundtrack is one of the most beloved among all game music. But did you know that behind its sound, there is a rich subcultural movement and legacy it directly pulls from? Join us as we explore the interesting crossover between video game music and the influential Shibuya-kei music scene at the turn of the millennium, as well as the specific musicians and composers who connected them. Along with Katamari, we’ll listen to and break down the music of the Bemani rhythm games, Billy Hatcher, Roommania #203, and many others! Panelists: William Lamkin [Music Professor, www.williamlamkin.com] Michael Klinberg [Music Teacher and Violinist] MAGFest is run by MAGFest, Inc., a volunteer-supported 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the appreciation of video games, video game culture, and video game music. We achieve this through numerous events, such as Super MAGFest, MAGWest, MAGStock, and Bit Gen Gamer Fest. We also support other not-for-profit organizations, such as Child’s Play.
