I know, typically, recreational users and hobbyists will order an after market antenna such as a Diamond after they purchase a hobby grade radio such as a Baofang in the belief that it will improve the performance of their radio. While I do not have an antenna such as a Diamond to test, what we have found here with our bench and field tests indicate HAMs and recreationalists would not need to purchase an aftermarket antenna for operating the TID Radio over frequencies in the HAM or (or, possibly in foreign jurisdictions where legal, adjacent bands such as FRS). I have been guilty in the past of telling clients that most stock antennas are about as good as a coat hanger. However, while the TID stock antenna shown here may not be resonant on the 1.25-meter band with a second harmonic, it does display acceptable standing wave characteristics on both the 70 cm UHF and 2 meter VHF bands. While the TID Radio stock antenna is "entry level" and may not be able to compete in terms of durability and performance with a properly tuned aftermarket antenna, it punches above its weight class for an OEM antenna who's providence is offshore . In terms of antennas supplied with hobbyist radios, it is the best we've seen so far. It may not demonstrate the maximum performance increase that a tuned aftermarket antenna could achieve, but it represents good value for recreational and amateur radio enthusiasts on a budget.
