Event to mark the 73rd Anniversary of the Genocide Convention and the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. “The voices of youth for a peaceful and inclusive world” I. BACKGROUND By its resolution 69/323 of 29 September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime1. December 9 marks the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the Genocide Convention). Every year the Office on Genocide Prevention and Responsibility to Protect organizes events to mark this International Day, honouring the victims of genocide and the anniversary of the Convention. This year’s event has been dedicated to the role of youth in promoting peace and atrocity prevention around the world. It highlighted the diverse and positive ways that young people have contributed to, and participated in, past and current responses to situations of violence and atrocity crimes in many countries including Rwanda where GAERG President, Mr. Egide Gatari, joined the organized virtual interactive discussion and shared his experience and that of GAERG in dealing with Genocide consequences. It as well illustrated what are the challenges that youth are facing, what support they need, and how the United Nations, Member States and other actors can support them. The youth constitute most of the population in many countries that experienced or are currently facing violence and risks of atrocity crimes. Several peace initiatives that led to change in conflict dynamics in several countries were initiated by youth, through informal and creative avenues. Young people have been conveying peace messages and advocating the promotion of human rights, democracy, and accountability worldwide. This has been done through a range of initiatives, including the organization of peaceful demonstrations and campaigns, the use of online social media platforms to influence public awareness and opinion, and the promotion of dialogue among diverse ethnic and religious groups, among others. GAERG’s vision is for a World free of Genocide and the organization work among others focus on increasing knowledge and awareness of history of the Genocide against the 1 A/RES/69/323 Tutsi, other genocides around the world, and increase knowledge on prevention of the spread of stereotypes and ideologies that could result in genocide and other conflicts.
