A political firestorm has erupted in West Bengal over the alleged gang-rape of a medical student in Durgapur and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's subsequent controversial remarks. The BJP, led by Suvendu Adhikari, has launched a six-day protest, accusing the government of failing to protect women. In response to the incident, Mamata Banerjee said, 'especially the girl child, at night time, they should not be allowed to come out in the outside.' This statement has drawn widespread condemnation for alleged victim-blaming. Amid the political turmoil, the victim's family has expressed fear for their security and a desire to leave West Bengal.
