My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand. When darkness seems to veil His face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil. His oath, His covenant, and blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found; Clad in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne. "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less" was written by Edward Mote, an English Baptist pastor, in 1834. Mote was a cabinetmaker by trade but became a preacher later in life. The hymn is centered on the steadfastness of faith in Jesus Christ, reflecting Mote’s own strong belief in the certainty of salvation through Christ alone. The well-known refrain, "On Christ the solid rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand," emphasizes the theme of placing one’s trust and hope in Jesus as the only reliable foundation. The hymn was originally called "The Immutable Basis of a Sinner’s Hope" and became widely sung in Christian worship, particularly due to its comforting message during times of uncertainty. Its lyrics are rooted in biblical imagery, notably drawn from passages like Matthew 7:24-27, which speaks of building on a firm foundation.
