Sharks and rays you may see at the Poor Knights Islands

If you are lucky enough to visit the Poor Knights, especially over the New Zealand summer, then keep an eye out for these special encounters. Our short and long tail stingrays can usually be found. Eagle rays are a little less see, but there giant oceanic cousins are a rare but special site. Oceanic mantas follow the warmer waters and are around the Poor Knights, New Zealand from December to March. Our sharks are even shyer. With most species of sharks found in New Zealand, we rarely see them in the water. Our bronze whalers are the most frequently see along. The bottom dwelling carpet shark can be found at the Poor Knights. Even less spotted are School Sharks and Makos, but on occasion we see them. We now of only one Scalloped Hammerhead seen whilst diving there, but the pups are often seen in the summer months at the surface close to the mainland. The extremely rare whale shark is seen each year in the area by the game fisherman following the beaked fish.
