Welcome to the final day of Tiger Barb’s August Odyssey 2023, and what a day it was! Stay tuned because this was a good one! There is a Chinese curse about living in interesting times and similarly this was an interesting ride. We rode through a storm that became a tornado and stopped to help a motorcyclist who was hit by a car. This ride was way too interesting! The day started smoothly, with a fantastic breakfast at the Kemptville Five Star Restaurant with Al and Karen. On the way there, I rode Al's Honda Goldwing and it is an extraordinary work of engineering. It is a completely different type of machine than the Tiger and it just wowed me. After breakfast, we rode through the lovely village of Burrits Rapids to pick up the Dwyer Hill Road. The route is a fantastic way to skirt the Ottawa Region but it sure could use a new surface. I felt like we were back in Quebec. We jogged around a few spectacularly beautiful backroads before finally reaching Calabogie. Once there, we had a quick pit stop and put on our rain gear. The sky was looking super ominous and the weather radar showed a massive storm heading our way. Not long after leaving Calabogie, we rode into a heavy rain that lasted for 90 miserable minutes. The miserable bit was partly my own doing because I packed my old Frog Toggs rain gear instead of my more reliable one piece Revit Pacific rain suit. There are several stupid reasons that I did this but the end result was that I was soaked through to my underpants by the time we reached sunny Bancroft. Later we learned that that storm had become a tornado! Luckily, it turns out that I am waterproof and all I needed was a Peanut Buster Parfait to recover. So we stopped at Dairy Queen and I got changed into dry undies in the parking lot behind the restaurant. Luckily, the DQ's air conditioning unit is at ground level with a frame built around it. I hung my riding pants and jacket there so that the hot exhaust air would blow through them. That worked well and my stuff was totally dry in half an hour. For what it is worth, Tiger Barb packed the appropriate rain gear and stayed dry. The sun continued to shine as we left Bancroft and we had a great ride on Hwy 41 and the terrific 128 until we reached Tory Hill. There we were back into rain gear as it started raining again. This time it was a light rain and the Frog Toggs were up to the task. Not long after the rain stopped, we came across an accident in the village of Norland. There was a wrecked motorcycle in the middle of the road and an injured biker not far from it. There were a few people at the scene but none had a first aid kit. I carry one when I travel, so we rode up and offered assistance. As I began speaking to our fallen brother, a person arrived and said that she was a First Aid Instructor and asked if she could help. I was happy to step aside. The bike was leaking gasoline onto the road and I walked over and turned it off. As I did that, we could hear the sirens of the local volunteer fire and rescue trucks. The downed rider was stable and talking and the first people on the scene had done a good job to not move him and to block traffic to keep him safe. He didn't appear to be wearing full riding gear but his jacket and pants were intact. His running shoes were still on and his major complaint was his ankle. It was only minutes later that paramedics arrived and he seemed in good spirits as they administered care. Despite being a low speed collision, the bike looked totaled and the car it hit sustained quite a bit of damage. The firefighters thanked us for stopping and allowed us to ride past their truck and we headed home with heightened caution. It is a good reminder to wear all of the gear all of the time and it is a catalyst for me to take the Rider Down First Aid course. With the road blocked by the fire trucks, we had very light traffic all the way to Orillia. After getting gas there, we had clear sailing all the way to sunny Brewster's Lake. The trip was 504 km. We left Kemptville at 11:00 and arrived home at 7:30. That was a pretty good time for all that happened. We were exhausted but as always we were happy to be home. As an added bonus to being home, our son Jasper had brought pizza home for dinner. We had a great trip, saw great friends and had lots of laughs. I love you all. Good night from Brewster's Lake. 🎞️See the story of my crash: • Tiger Down! Crashed. I got hit by a car wh...
