Our field hedges have been cut every 2 or 3 years with mechanical hedge trimmer for the last 30 or 40 years and although this makes them look tidy it can cause thick growth to rise up and stop new growth by blocking light to the hedge soil. We have no idea how old our hedges are but they are all at least 200 years, probably about 400 - 500 years but could be up to 6000 years old as that is when the first hedges in Cornwall were built according to a webpage on the Cornwall council website. Sheep can then find their way into the hedge and potentially escape. We could and have used netting and barbed wire on some hedges but I like to have a nice natural looking hedge that is also stock proof and that takes a bit of work. Most of our hedges have enough blackthorn and hawthorn in them to do the job, other tree species we commonly have are hazel, oak, ash, elm, willow, cherry, holly and rose. We also have a few sycamore and beech trees and I think these must have been introduced more recently and a couple of horse chestnut that I know my father introduced.
