Advancing treatment possibilities in oro-maxillo-facial rehabilitation PhD defence of the PhD students of the Centre for Translational Medicine, Semmelweis University. In this defence, Dr. János König presents pioneering work at the intersection of digital dentistry, maxillofacial prosthetics, and rehabilitation research. His PhD thesis includes two major systematic reviews that confront the clinical and technological gaps in prosthetic rehabilitation for patients with severe facial and maxillary defects. 🧠 Study 1: Accuracy of Digital Face Scanning for Facial Prostheses Is facial surface scanning accurate enough to replace traditional moulding techniques? Dr. König conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis across facial regions (nasal, perioral, orbital) to evaluate the trueness of various 3D scanning technologies. Findings show: Most digital scanners produce clinically acceptable models Accuracy still varies by region and device A clear need for workflows enabling direct silicone prosthesis printing 🧩 Study 2: Surgery vs Prosthetics in Hemimaxillectomy Patients This systematic review compared surgical reconstruction vs. prosthetic obturation in hemimaxillectomy patients. Using quality of life scores, mastication indices, and speech intelligibility: No significant clinical difference was found between groups Data quality was poor with high heterogeneity Highlights the urgent need for patient registries and RCTs in this under-researched population 🔬 Dr. König's work is deeply embedded in improving digital workflows, prosthetic access, and evidence-based decision-making for patients with head and neck defects. He is the founder of the Complete Denture Prosthetics Working Group and plays a leading role in digital infrastructure at the Department of Prosthodontics, Semmelweis University. 📍 Centre for Translational Medicine | Semmelweis University The event was supported by the MOL-New Europe Foundation. #PhDdefence #FacialProsthetics #MaxillofacialRehab #DigitalDentistry #3DScanning #TissueEngineering #Prosthodontics #TranslationalMedicine
