In this video, myself and two friend take a trek into the wilderness that is the Forest of Dean. The main goal was to have a go at our first ever overnighter using hammocks. It pretty much pissed down from about half an hour after we got there, and didn't let up until we were breaking camp down to come home. Still, none of us are made of sugar or residents of Oz, so no problems there. After a short trek on the footpaths we peel off into the forest proper to locate a suitable spot to hang three hammocks. We were initially going to set them up a little more spaced out as individual shelters, but due to the rain we decided to create a communal shelter. Gotta say that that worked out brilliantly, giving us a dry area for cooking, kit storage, and somewhere to hang the wet gear in an attempt to dry it out a bit. The cheapo hammock I bought doesn't weigh a lot and can be used as a ground sheet or as a tarp. And, on a recent distance hike, there were several times where the ground condition were poor and the hammock would've prevented me from having to travel much, much further in order to bed down, so its definitely earned a place in my shelter kit. I don't think I'll upgrade to a more expensive/specialised system though, because as a ground dweller, I still think the majority of my wild camping will be bivi/tarp. This is only my second YouTube video and I hope to be bringing you many many more, so comments and constructive criticism are more than welcome.
