The V2 rocket, developed by Nazi Germany during World War II, was not intended for space exploration but as a weapon of war. Between 1944 and 1945, over 3,000 V2 rockets were launched, targeting cities like London, Antwerp, and Liège. These attacks resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and widespread destruction. Additionally, tens of thousands of forced laborers died constructing these rockets under harsh conditions. In June 1944, a V2 rocket became the first man-made object to reach space, marking a significant milestone in space history. After the war, both the United States and the Soviet Union captured V2 rockets and German scientists. The U.S. brought over more than 1,600 German scientists, including Wernher von Braun, under Operation Paperclip. The Soviet Union achieved several space firsts, including launching Sputnik 1 and 2, sending the first living creature, Laika, into orbit, and sending the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space. The United States also made significant strides, launching Explorer 1, sending Alan Shepard into space, and developing the Saturn V rocket that carried astronauts to the Moon. Before the V2 rocket, space exploration was merely a concept. The V2's development and subsequent repurposing for space exploration laid the groundwork for the space age. Had the V2 not been created, the trajectory of space exploration might have been significantly delayed. The advancements made possible by the V2 and the expertise of German scientists were instrumental in the early achievements of both the Soviet and U.S. space programs. --- Sources: V-2 rocket - Wikipedia V-2 No. 13 - Wikipedia Wernher von Braun - Wikipedia V-2 rocket: Origin, history and spaceflight legacy | Space.com The First Photograph of Earth from Space - History of Information The First Ever Photograph from Space - Time V2 rocket: Origin, history and spaceflight legacy | Space.com 📚 Sources: 1.
