Where do you see beauty? It’s often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe some of us admire wide landscapes, some look at flowers, whilst others prefer watching different creatures. At the MRC Toxicology Unit, our scientists admire beauty on the microscale. Using fluorescent labels for different proteins, scientists can marvel at the tiny structures inside our cells. Hear from Senior Scientist in the MacFarlane Lab, Xiao-Ming Sun as he shows us the cardiomyocytes he is working with, why he finds them beautiful, and what proteins he is looking at. Studying how these cells are affected by newly developed drugs is helping us predict their toxic effects on the heart (cardiotoxicity) so that we can work towards developing safer treatments.
