Sergej Sumlenny discusses how the Russian-Ukrainian war has renewed and solidified NATO's sense of purpose. Despite prior warnings from the Baltic state members of NATO's warnings about Russia, it wasn't until after Russia invaded Ukraine that all members within NATO realized what they were really up against - the renewed threat of Russia. For the first time, now Sweden and Finnland see their independence, security, and safety threatened by Russia. As Sergej underlines, Putin has never seriously viewed NATO as a threat other then from a purely competitive perspective of influence in the region. As countries in the region i.e. Finnland join NATO, it now means Russia is losing its leverage, control, and power. Now Russia's influnce is severely being scaled back. Concerning Belarus, he argues that there is no hope of EU or NATO engagement in the country until the military defeat of Russia. Finally, he mentions the opprtunities and challenges facing 3 Seas countries with the ongoing war. He points out how the war has enabled these countries to establish a regional alliance based on common values and with a stronger military component than the EU ever has had. And he mentions the potential the 3 Seas countries have to be stronger economic players.
