DescriptionWe know about Afghanistan because of one of the worst humanitarian disasters – the Taliban – and the 2001 invasion that led to the current war. It is difficult to remember a time in Afghanistan when there wasn’t fighting. But not as many people know of the true war in Afghanistan – before the Taliban even existed. The Soviet Union waged a brutal war in Afghanistan from 1979-1989, massacring 1.5 million civilians, 1/3rd of the country homeless, and making 5 million more refugees to Pakistan. The Pro-Russian puppet Communist dictatorship of Afghanistan that came to power through a coup in 1978, became increasingly unpopular for killing tens of thousands of political prisoners, massacring civilians, uprooting Islamic values and brutally repressing resistance. The Soviets came at the request of the puppet dictatorship to crush the rebellions and maintain Afghanistan as a sphere of influence. Russia has been exploiting Afghanistan for resources, like any other empire. The are responsible for one of the last genocides of the 20th century.
