Built between 1937 and 1943, the Mars La Tour Kaserne served as an extension of the Uhlanenkaserne and Reiter Kaserne in Fürstenwalde, housing the II./Kavallerie-Regiment 9. Upon its completion in 1943, the Mars La Tour Kaserne (named after the Prussian victory over the French in Mars La Tour in 1870) consisted of 8 barracks and two mess halls. After the majority of troops in Fürstenwalde had been sent to the front lines, the Mars La Tour Kaserne was used to house several reserve and training units, such as the Radfahr-Ausbildungs-Abteilung 9 - a bicycle infantry unit around 1943. Its from this unit that the Mars La Tour Kaserne received its other name, the "Radfahrerkaserne" (literally "Cyclist Barracks"). After the war, the Soviet Military initially had no use for the barracks, permitting them to be partially torn down. They changed their mind in 1954, turning the remaining buildings into a military hospital. The remaining buildings were handed over to the German Government after the Soviet withdrawal from Fürstenwalde in 1993, and have remained empty ever since. Several of the buildings have been torn down since the year 2000, with only the main hospital wing and the main entrance gate surviving. The building has seen severe vandalism and arson attacks over the years, leading to the question how long this building will survive in its current state.
