Set in the year 2154, the story follows Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine who is sent to the lush, alien world of Pandora. Humanity has exhausted Earth's natural resources and is now mining a rare mineral called "Unobtainium" on Pandora to solve Earth's energy crisis. Because the atmosphere on Pandora is toxic to humans, scientists have created the Avatar Program—genetically engineered bodies that are a hybrid of human DNA and the DNA of the native Na’vi (the 10-foot tall, blue-skinned inhabitants). Jake is tasked with infiltrating the Na’vi to find a way to make them leave their home, which sits atop a massive mineral deposit. However, after being saved by a Na’vi woman named Neytiri, Jake deeply connects with their culture and the biological network of their forest. He soon finds himself torn between the high-tech military force of his own kind and the spiritual, nature-bound world of the Na'vi.
