Storyteller Wendy Shearer tells and reflects upon the Caribbean folktale: Anansi & Fire, a trickster tale which invites you to join in the Caribbean spirit with a sprinkle of sunshine, a dash of sea breeze and plenty of dancing. This is one of Wendy’s ‘soul stories’, told to her by her Grandmother and later informed and inspired by Jamaican folklorist Louise Bennett-Coverley. It is a story that has travelled with her from childhood to motherhood and from Guyana to Britain. We explore what this story means to Wendy, how it holds the memory of strong women in her life, culture and celebration. Wendy is a London based storyteller, oral historian and author of Guyanese heritage, sharing stories from the African and Caribbean diasporas. She works with libraries, schools and institutions across the arts, including the V & A, the British Library, the British Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts, performing, consulting and leading workshops in the art of storytelling. She is Chair of ‘The Society for Storytelling’ - a charity that promotes Storytellers and Storytelling by raising public awareness of the value and benefits of oral storytelling.
