A few years back another person posted an almost contemptuous scold to me, advising me that this tune was much more effectively played in another tuning from the one I recommend here, and that I was somehow being dishonest in promoting an "incorrect" method. In fact, the method of tuning all four strings to 5th of whichever key you want to play in (e.g. A for the key of D) does achieve smoother and more complete chords than my tuning, and enables the -player to use all three courses in the dominant chord. But I chose the tuning I use here because most of the dulcimer players I've met have preferred smaller stretches of the fingers than the triple-5 tuning demands. In other words, I compromised for the sake of wide playability. For the adventurous, do try the other method---you'll figure out the differences if you've tried my method already---and if it suits you better, go for it. For the time being, here's my offering. BULLETIN! It's now 2015 and I just posted my 499th video on YT, and it is the long-awaited UNISON-TUNING way to play it for those of you willing (and able) to make longer stretches. Go to my channel page to find it if you'd like!
