The Fringe is Choate’s festival of original plays, films, songs, poetry, and other word-based performance written entirely by Choate students. Emerging in 2013 out of the Student Playwriting Festival, the Fringe continues Choate decades-long tradition of staging student work. The aim of the Fringe is to teach students about the process of creating a festival through each stage of the process, from play selection and development (with staged readings in the fall), through casting and rehearsals (this winter), through rehearsals and production (today!). No prior experience is required to participate, so students learn how to do their jobs – as artistic board members and producers, writers, directors, actors, stage-managers, and designers – during a year-long process supported and scaffolded by the faculty advisor. While the students develop their work independently in rehearsal, the Fringe wouldn’t be possible without the help of the Choate community, and the Fringe would like to offer special thanks and huge gratitude to Kelly Lorraine, Tracy Terry, Deighna DeRiu, Kalya Yannatos, Carol Jones, Mark G., Paul Bozzi, Tracy Ginder-Delventhal, Sherry Marrotte Newman, Alex Long, James Yanelli, Ross Mortensen, Sabrina Toscano, Sam Doak, and Ben Small.
