Egypt Prison Torture: Leaked video shows torture in Cairo police station

A video of the Egyptian police torturing detainees in a Cairo police station surfaced online, confirming, the extent to which officers inflict violence on civilians. The video, recorded by a detainee through a cell door, shows two inmates hung in painfully stress positions. Naked from the waist up the detainees were seen being suspended from a metal grate by their arms pulled behind. Rights groups allege that abuse by Egypt’s security services are out of control even after 11 years of the uprising. The videos were vetted by trusted experts for authenticity, while detainees shown in the video also named some of the police officers previously named in reports as working at el-Salam First Police Station. Since coming to power after a military coup in 2013, Sisi presided over a renewed era of impunity for security forces. Human Rights Watch detailed the use of stress positions as potential crime against humanity in a report it published in the year 2017. The report cited 19 individual cases where detainees “were tortured in police stations and national security offices across the country” Rights groups have also reported frequent deaths among detainees. In 2015, Amnesty International provided evidence of at least nine deaths in custody at the Mattareya police station in Cairo. In 2016, Sisi publicly instructed the interior ministry to prevent abuse by police following an outcry over an officer who shot a taxi driver dead. Despite that multiple cases of civilian deaths caused by police surfaced.
