United States Army Transportation Corps S160 Class We take a look at the 2-8-0 locomotives built for the war effort during the Second World War. Built in the USA and shipped in the UK, before deployment over Europe and further afield. 2253 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1943. The loco was shedded at Neville Hill, Leeds before being shipped to France in 1944. The locomotive became Polish State Railway TR203-288 after the war, being returned to the UK in 1992 for use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. We first see the locomotive on display at Locomotion, the NRM at Shildon. The locomotive is then seen in its new red livery and named Omaha after its most recent overhaul. The locomotive is seen at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Churnet Valley Railway. The loco is now based at the Dartmouth Steam Railway. 5197 was built by Lima Locomotive Works, Ohio in 1945. The locomotive was exported to China in 1946, classified as KD6 by the Chinese State Railways and numbered KD6.463. The locomotive was brought to the UK in 1995 and overhauled at Llangollen, emerging from overhaul in 1998. The locomotive is nowadays based at the Churnet Valley Railway were the locomotive is seen, solo and with 6046 and 2253. 6046 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1945. The locomotive was delivered by France, before moving to Hungary. The locomotive was 411.144 of the MAV 411 class for Hungarian State Railways. The locomotive was restored and entered traffic at the Churnet Valley Railway in 2012. We see the well travelled locomotive in action on the Churnet Valley Railway, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, West Somerset Railway and Didcot Railway Centre. This was not the first visit of an S160 to Didcot, with members of the class shedded and operating out of the depot during the war. 5820 'Big Jim' was built at the Lima Locomotive Works, Ohio in 1945. The locomotive was shipped to Poland and was numbered by Poland State Railways as TR203-474. The locomotive moved to the UK in 1977 (having travelled from Szczecin to Hull), being based ever since on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. www.preservedrailway.co.uk (C) Lee Andrew Davies 2021
