We use exchange sacrifices to control squares of a particular color and create an imbalance position When to consider an exchange sacrifice? 1. To change the nature of the position 2. To close the position 3. To complicate the game 4. To create an attack 5. If the position is passive 6. If the opponent’s rook is very passive and won’t join the game for the next few moves7. To gain some space Things to remember! 1. Don’t move your pieces backward to passive square 2. Always look for tactics during the game. If you are looking for safe moves, you would find safe moves. If you are looking for tactical moves you will find some tactics even in a simple position. So keep looking for tactics in every position. 3. While calculating always look for forcing moves 4. With exchange sacrifices, you can activate your minor pieces 5. Sometimes you have to make an exchange sacrifice immediately. But don’t take casual decisions because mistakes are likely to happen, your sacrifice might not always be correct 6.
